Genealogy research

Genlias provides a first step in tracing your family history in the Netherlands. You will have to find recent information yourself. After that, you can find the names and important dates in the lives of your ancestors in Genlias from 1780 onwards. But there is plenty more for you to find out. This site provides some tips on where to go next.

Beginners
Genealogical research starts with your own papers. Once you get back to around 1900, Genlias can help you. Many other tools exist to help the starting genealogist.
Archive research
The reading rooms of public archives are open on most weekdays, and usually one or two evenings a week as well. Why not visit the archive in the province where your ancestors lived and find out what it has to offer?
Other sources
How did your ancestors live? Were they rich or poor? Did they own their own home?
Answers to these questions can not be found in Genlias, but there are plenty of other sources to consult.
