Map of the Caribbean
All the islands in the Caribbean are included in the Antilles with
the exception of the Bahamas. The islands lie in a curve southward
from the tip of Florida to the north-west of Venezuela.
The Antilles
are divided into the Greater Antilles and Lesser Antilles. In
turn, the Lesser Antilles are divided into Windward Islands and
Leeward
Islands. A confusing factor is that the Netherlands regards the
so-called SSS islands as Windward Islands and the ABC islands as
Leeward Islands,
whereas internationally these terms are used exactly the other
way around.
There are at least 7000 large and small islands and reefs in
the area. The islands have now been sub-divided into 25 regions
of which
some are independent states and others dependent territories.
