How do I search in Genlias?

Genlias provides a search form offering a range of choices. By combining these, you can search the database quickly and efficiently. Once you have defined your search query, click on "Search" to submit it.

Example of a search query:

You are descended from the famous Amsterdam alderman F.M. Wibaut, after whom a busy street is now named. As a descendant, you know that his forenames were Florentinus Marinus and that he originally came from the province of Zeeland. He must have married during the 1880s, but you would like to know more. So you complete the search form as follows:

  • Surname Wibaut
  • Role bridegroom

Then you click on search. You don't have to fill in every field: often it is enough to only supply the surname combined with the first name or the role the person played in the record.

The search results include the following entry:

Surname Wibaut Given name Florentinus Marinus Role bridegroom Place Middelburg Year 1885.

Click the hyperlink under Source to access the most important information from the marriage record. This includes the name of Wibaut's bride, her age and place of birth, his age and place of birth and the names of both their parents.

To search further, go to Modify search query. This returns you to the search form. So, for example, you can now enter the names of Wibaut's parents and search for their marriage record.
